Alhamra: an artist's safe haven

As I walked on the road leading to Alhamra, nostalgia struck me hard. I had been a regular here during summers since I was nine, taking art classes and making memories with my fellows.

‘Alhamra’ literally means a woman in red clothes. This building is made up of red bricks, earning the same impression.

A statue of our national poet, Allama Muhammad Iqbal sits at the front entrance, as if observing everyone who walks by and asking what contributions they are making for their beloved homeland.

As I entered the building labeled ‘Classrooms,’ I was struck by a sweet melody of flute that echoed, creating a serene ambiance around me. We were headed towards the recording studio that had been closed for 30 years until December 2015.

The studio had been reopened for a musical season ‘Alhamra Unplugged,’ with a complete makeover given to it under the supervision of Abubakar Javed.

Around 15 to 20 traditional and modern instruments were placed in the studio that included Tabla, Sitar, Harp, Sarangi, Drums, Spanish Guitar, Harmonium, Rhubab, Surmandal, to name a few.

It was good to see that the administration is taking initiatives to revive the once important place that produced such great talent. It is still a place where one can familiarize oneself with the upcoming Pakistani artists.

What memories do you have of Alhamra?
