Different presentations of Women Empowerment on streets

Some thought dancing was a better way to beg for empowerment from the society, while others actually took it in their hands to empower women on streets.

As i googled women empowerment in Pakistan, all i came across was the advertisement video of some girls taking off their 'chadar' and dancing off in Anarkali bazaar, Lahore, among a crowd of men.

The category of men who probably enjoyed what they saw at that moment, but went home to tell their wives, sisters, and daughters to never go out without covering themselves ever again.

This is not how you create awareness about women empowerment.

As i further deepened my research, I came across a group of girls who challenged male dominance of public spaces by organizing female-only bike races. The event was held in response to some men in Lahore who pushed off a girl off her bicycle for not responding to their catcalls.

It was organized by Girls at Dhabas - the name given to roadside restaurants in Pakistan - to promote female participation in public events, fight restrictions faced by women in public places and increase awareness.

Girls at Dhabas hope to build a community-run dhaba, led by women and sexual minorities . It will have a community center attached to it, from where they will run their activities, campaigns, and host small events to help women find space for themselves in Pakistan’s public sphere.

Now that's how you empower women.

You go girls!
